A place where comic book fans and nerds have a home..

I’m waiting in for the Felicia Day panel line, and  talking with a new friend about cosplaying. And the boyfriends that don’t come to cons. So far my day has been all about DC Comics, in which I have gained plenty of info for my marketing project on DC. I have to admit I am having serious regret not cosplaying this year. I have so much respect admiration for those who put in so much time into these amazing costumes. Felicia Day just got on stage, and since I’m bad at live blogging I’ll go now.

There is a great documentary making its rounds called Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines that traces the evolution and legacy of Wonder Woman.  The film covers the birth of the comic book superheroine to the blockbuster television series, while looking at how popular representation of powerful women often reflects society’s own anxieties about women’s liberation. The film was recently apart of the documentary series Independent Lens and you can still watch the film on PBS website for free. However if you want some post film discussion in the comfort of your own bed or couch , you can head over to ITVS OVEE on April 24 where they will be doing a free screening of Wonder Women! . I highly suggest you watch this film anyway that you can. Even you aren’t a comic book or Wonder Woman film it’s an intriguing film to watch.

Upcoming Screenings

Asterisks denotes that the filmmaker will be in attendance for Q&A after screening

SPARK San Francisco, San Francisco, California, May 16, 6 p.m.**

It’s been a while since the last Her Comics post and a lot has happened in a years’ time. Since our last post, DC came out with the 52’s and I fell in love with the Animal Man series. Within that year I moved back to my favorite city, Chicago, and live close to three of my favorite comic book stores. During my break from the site I got to meet some pretty awesome people, including one of my favorite creators –  Liz Prince.

I have to give a big Thank You to Jason Poland  and Dan Connor  for being awesome supporters of Her Comics. Now, Her Comics will continue to inform you about awesome comics out there while also showcasing zines and other geek-friendly on goings.

Janes in Love

by Cecil Castellucci and Jim Rugg

It’s hard enough being a teenager trying to figure out who you are and how you fit in this world. The last thing you want you need is something coming along to complicate things. Usually that’s when love enters the picture. Never has there been something so complicated and great as being a teenager in love. Cecil Castellucci captures that mixed bag of emotions in Janes in Love (Minx).

Janes in Love, by Cecil Castellucci (Minx)

In this sequel to The Plain Janes , the four Janes return and are dealing with the aftermath of an art attack that caused trouble for someone close to them.  Tensions over the art attacks are running high in the girls’ small town of Kent Water with their number one enemy Officer Sanchez leading the march. If all this wasn’t enough, Valentine’s Day is fast approaching and the girls have bitten by the love bug. P.l.a.i.n’s fearless leader isn’t letting anything stand in her group’s way of creating their community artwork as she applies for a grant from the National Foundation for the Arts.

While The Plain Janes (Minx 2007), focused on the blossoming friendship between the girls, Janes in Love takes a look at the girls dealing with that crazy little thing called love. The subject of teens dealing with day-to-day life while falling in love has been done many times, however Cecil Castellucci makes it something I still want to read about. Castellucci doesn’t ignore the fact that teens go through a lot during those difficult high school years. Even with those added elements Castellucci still manages highlight that wonderful anxiety ridden feeling of being young and in love. Complementing Castellucci’s story, Rugg’s artwork has a crisp, clean feel to it that gives it an indie comic book look.
